Kigali, Rwanda — September 15, 2025 — In a resounding display of national unity and defense of sovereignty, Rwanda's Parliament formally rejected the European Parliament's resolution calling for the release of Victoire Ingabire Umuhoza, convicted by Rwandan courts on charges including conspiracy to undermine the established government and spreading genocide ideology.

The EU resolution, adopted without a thorough review of the judicial record, was characterized by Rwandan lawmakers as an example of selective human rights framing that ignores the substance of the charges and the integrity of Rwanda's judicial process.

Rwanda's response reflects a broader pattern in which external pressure on African judicial decisions is treated as a sovereignty issue — particularly when those decisions concern crimes related to genocide ideology and national security.
